Closings: The Senior Center will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day. When the Bolton Center Schools are closed due to inclement weather the Senior Center will also be closed.

Town Of Bolton Tax Benefit: The town of Bolton provides a tax benefit for homeowners and renters who are elderly or have a disability. The filing period for homeowners is February 1, 2008 through May 15, 2008. For renters, the filing period is May 15, 2008 through September 15, 2008. Income limit is $29,800 for a single and $36,500 for married couples. For more information please call the assessorŐs office at 649-8066 ext. 100.

AARP Tax Filing Assistance: AARP free tax assistance will be available through April 15 on an appointment-only basis. The tax counselors are volunteers who are trained and certified by the AARP, the IRS, and approved by the CT DRS. Please call 647-9196 to schedule your appointment.

Senior Needs Assistance Program/Spring Clean-Up: The Senior Needs assistance program is funded in part by the Older American's Act through the North Central Area on Aging. Yard clean-up, housekeeping, and handyman services are available. Seniors must be 60 years of age or older and Bolton residents to qualify. Please call the Senior Center at 647-9196 if you would like to register for this service.

CHOICES: Elaine Waudby a CHOICES volunteer, is available by appointment at the Senior Center to provide information and assistance regarding health insurance, Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medicaid, Medicare Supplemental and Long-Term Care insurance. CHOICES volunteers do not sell insurance. If you would like more information or assistance, please call the Senior Center at 647-9196. The volunteer will call you to set up an appointment.

Reminder: In addition to our regular programs we also provide a fuel bank, community referrals, Salvation Army assistance, and a food pantry.

Thank You! We would like to thank all those in the Bolton community who gave generously to our fuel bank and food pantry. It has been a very difficult year and we have been fortunate to have had the resources to help several families who have needed extra assistance this year.

BOLTON TRAVELERS OFFER TRIPS:

April 26, 2008 - West Point Dress Parade
      The West Point Dress Parade is conducted with great pomp and circumstance. The cadets march in full uniform in cadence with the military music. Lunch is at the Hotel Thayer's Bountiful Buffet. A guided tour of West Point highlights is included. Transportation is by deluxe motorcoach. Cost $70 pp payable to Bolton Travelers. Call Doris Grisel at 649-9700 for more information.

July 30-August 1 - Maine Lobster Festival
      Take a trip to Maine to the Rocktide Inn on Boothbay Harbor with a Double Lobster Bake on the first day of this exciting trip. On day 2 enjoy dinner and a show at the Carousel Music Theatre. On the third day we go on to Ogunquit to Perkins Cove and the Marginal Way and then a Lobster Boat Cruise on the "The Finestkind." Time for shopping and lunch before we return home. Cost: $411 pp twin/triple. Pick up a flier at the Senior Center or call Doris Grisel for further information.

September 25 - Aqua Turf
      Laugh yourself silly! See sought-after Las Vegas comedian Rick Starr! He has been featured on the Johnny Carson and Jay Leno shows. Great comedy! Cost: $69 pp. Stop by for a flier. For more information call Doris Grisel at 649-9700.

Monday Movies: On the second Monday of the month we go by van to the Buckland Cinema for a 1 p.m. movie with a special senior rate of $2. This includes a drink and popcorn. Sign up at the Senior Center if you are interested in attending these Monday Movies.




OTHER SERVICES OFFERED BY THE SENIOR CENTER

          For more information on any of the following programs and services, call the senior center at 647-9196.

Transportation

          The Senior and disabled transportation program, which receives funding from the Greater Hartford Transit district, provides passenger trips to residents age 60 and older, and to disabled adults free of charge. Transportation is provided on a scheduled, space-available basis for medical appointments, grocery shopping, errands, and community events.
          Please note- A winter reminder regarding senior van service: On days when the schools are closed due to inclement weather, there will be no van service. If the schools are open but the weather is questionable, the senior center staff will decide whether or not to provide van service.

The Senior Needs Assistance Program

Chore assistance - provides services such as yard work and minor chores, mowing, raking, yard and basement cleaning, snow shoveling, and cleaning gutters. Please call in advance to schedule chore assistance.

Home Help - provides assistance with chores in the home, including vacuuming, laundry, and light cleaning.

Handyman Program - offers assistance in the areas of minor carpentry and light plumbing. Up to three hours of service per request is provided. A co-payment of $5 per hour is charged for this program.

Outreach/Social Support - designed to seek out clients in isolated areas and to assist them in the awareness of the services available in the community that address their needs, and follow up.

The Senior Needs Assistance Program is funded, in part, by the Older Americans Act through the North Central Area Agency of Aging. Eligibility for services requires participants to be 60 years or older and residents of Bolton. Registration is required.

  • Friendly Visitors program - volunteers visiting homebound and isolated elderly

  • AARP driver education

  • Skin screening

  • Foot care clinic

  • Eye-screening clinic
